USEFUL TRAVEL TIPS The AMALFI COAST

1. Where to stay ? Many dream of Positano and staying at a hotel there. Know this !
The Hotels in Positano are super expensive. If you can afford it ? Wonderful. If not, stay
in Sorrento, Salerno, Minori, or another town in the area suitable for you.

I started going to Positano in 1985, when it was much more affordable, and far less popular
and crowded.

2.  Research how to get there, and determine which is best for you.

3. Best Photo spots ? Everywhere !!!

4 . Things tot do ? The best in most popular thing to do, is just hanging out. Go to the beach, have lunch, and a “Must Do” is Apertivo after you are done at the beach, or whatever you did that day

5.  What to Eat ? The # 1 Best dish to eat while on the Amalfi Coast is Spaghetti Vongole (Clam Sauce), it’s an absolute must have, and eat it more than once. Pizza and Gelato of course are some of the best local things to eat. You must get Sfogliatelle, the Clam Shaped Looking Pastry that was invented by Nuns in a Monastery on The Amalfi Coast.

Pizza was invented in Naples, which most everyone knows is the Pizza Capital of the World. And this carries onto the Amalfi Coast, where just about every place that has Pizza, makes some of the best Pizza in the World. And if you have the time, take a day trip to Naples to hit a couple famed Pizzeriasm, eat Sfogliatelle, Spaghetti, and the Best Espresso Coffee in the World. We recommend Caffe Gambrinus, a beautiful, elegant, old-world Caffe near the Piazza Plebiscite, Napoli.

On The Amalfi Coast, Andrea Panda Pasticceria next to the Cathedral, is one of Italy’s best, and my favourite Pastry Shop on the coast.

6.  Hiking The Path of The Gods is a Favorite Activity on The Amalfi Coast.

7.  Take a scenic boat ride of the Amalfi Coast or Capri. We highly recommend taking a full day boat trip to Capri, or if you have the time, what would be even better, and what I always do, is stay on the Island of Capri (hotels) for one or two days.

8. Many Love taking a Vespa Tour of the Coast. It’s so fun, and one of the best ways to explore the Amalfi Coast, seeing the towns of Positano, Amalfi, Minori, and Ravello. Just riding one of these scooters on the famed Amalfi Drive is a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime-experience that just about everyone loves. We highly recommend doing it. “So much Fun.” !

9.  If you are so include, list The Ancient Roman Ruins of Pompeii.

10. Go to Naples for the day. If you are staying in Salerno? Go to the train station, and hop on the next train to Napoli. It takes just 45 minutes, station to station. Eat Pizza, walk around, Eat Pizza or Spaghetti Vongole, Seafood Salad, or Clams Posillipo, and make sure to have a Sfogliatell Pastry or tasty Gelato for dessert.

Two favourite things to do, are taking a Pizza Making Class or Naples Street Food Tour.

There are several ways to get to Positano, either by Bus, Car, or Boat, and some ways are much better than other ones.

Beautifully Appointed Rooms

Casa Albertina is a wonderful 1st Class little family run Hotel that is perfectly situated so you get a nice view of the town from just a little way up, yet a short easy teen minute walk to the Beach and Center of Positano.

I first discovered Casa Albertina way back in 1986 and had 3 glorious days staying there. The son Lorenzo gave me a special rate, seeing I was a young man (22) and probably didn’t have much cash. This hotel is beautifully appointed and the entire staff provides the most friendly service. Casa Albertina is an Absolute Gem.

Note : The first time I stayed at CASA ALBERTINA was the Summer of 1986. The owners sone Lorenzo gave me a special rate of $79 a night, and I had an absolutely wonderful time. The next year when I came back, the price had gone up to $119 a night. When I checked the prices in May of 2018, the rate was $279 a night, and actually a reasonable rate for the quality of this hotel, which is not super deluxe, but does make it in to the luxury category of hotels.

View From VILLA MARIA ANTONIETTA

If You’re on a Budget, Villa Maria Antonietta is one of The Best Options in Town …

Positano has to be one of the hardest places in the World to find a hotel room, and in the Budget Category, almost but not Impossible. Villa Maria Antonietta is one of your best options if you want to pay less than $150 US Dollars a night. It’s almost impossible finding a room here in the high season (April to Mid October).  You have a much better chance getting a room here in the off-season when you can get a room for about $96 a night (US Dollars).
I first stayed here in the Summer of 1985, and was recommended this place by the late Poet RENE RICARD. At the time I paid $40 a night, so considering the way things have skyrocketed here in Positano, that you can get a room for about double the price in 2018, that’s pretty reasonable.
The accommodations are basic, but most important, they are clean, the location is Fantastic, you are in Positano and it’s relatively Cheap.
If you want to stay in in Summer, Book Far in Advance !!!

TIPS on GETTING a ROOM in POSITANO and The AMALFI COAST
Positano has to be without question one of the hardest places in the World for the Budget minded to get a hotel room. There are not many options, as most hotels, the prices are astronomical priced. Seriously! This being said, it’s not impossible and there are some options available.
We have Compiled a List of Several Affordable (Cheapest Hotel Rooms in POSITANO) Options for the Budget Minded. It wasn’t easy, but we did it.
It goes without sayint that’s it’s markedly more dificult to find a reasonably priced room here during the high season which runs from mid April to mid September, with mid May to the first weel of Septemeber being super busy.
This all being said, if it’s possible for you to go in October or April, these two months might be your best possible option. If you have plenty of cash and can afford to pay $300 or more a night for a hotel room, then you won’t have as much as a problem.
The other alternative to see Positano if you want to go during the High Season, is to stay in another town like, Paiano right next door to Positano, or Minori, Sorrento or other town near by, and take a bus or Boat to visit Positano, have a nice lunch and do some sightseeing.
Good Luck!

Positano , Italy

Yes, a Wonderful Ristorante Amazing View Great Food Excellent Service … This Hotel and Restaurant is a mainstay of the hugely popular town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Everything about the place is First Class, the hotel of course , the restaurant and a friendly professional staff of waiter, BBs, host, Chef, cooks, and all who work at this establishment. I’ve eaten here numerous times since 1985, and it’s always been a great experience including my latest trip this past May with my cousin Tony. We went for lunch, this was my cousin Tony’s first time, and he loved as I always have. I think I created a Monster when my cousin Tony said let’s get a bottle of Champagne and a suggested we might get a good quality Italian Sparkling Wine. A few days before  were at Lo Smeraldino Ristorante right on the water in Amalfi. I ordered the Ferrari “Perle” Brut 2007. It was wonderful and Tony was hooked, he loved it, and wanted to get it at almost every restaurant we went to for the rest of the trip. Now back to Buco di Bacco. Tony scanned the Wine List at Buco, he found the Ferrari “Perle” and ordered another bottle (Vintage 2010). We started drinking it and as with the 5 or so bottles of this wine we had on the trip, it was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed. Now when it came to ordering, for Antipasto we got an order of Melanzane Parmigiano (Eggplant Parm) and some grilled vegetables. Now, though we both love eating Seafood when down on the Amalfi Coast, when we saw Meatballs (Polpette) on the menu, we both ordered some. I ordered a plate of Spaghetti Meatballs while Tony ordered just Meatballs minus any pasta.

The BAR at BUCO Di BACCO

The service as usual was excellent, it was a absolutely gorgeous day in Positano and we were both a couple of Happy Campers outside on the lower Terrazzo of Buca Di Bacco. We both commented on how relaxing and peaceful it felt sitting there on the deck and we both sat back and thorughly enjoyed the whole experience and good fortune to having lunch there at such a nice restaurant in the beautiful town of Positano n the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Yes, we knew we were lucky and we were most certainly grateful to be sharing such a memorable meal together, two Italian-American cousins in Italy in Positano, The Amalfi Coast. Basta !

That’s the terrazzo of Caffe Positano where all the people are sitting outside, which if you started going to Positano long ago, you may know that spot as the old BAR DeMARTINO, one of my favorite places ever in Positano, but sadly no longer there. Anyway, this is a spectacular spot to get an Apertivo, have lunch or dinner, and just enjoy the moment and the beauty before you, and just how “Lucky” you are to be in this Gorgeous Place, known as Positano. Enjoy!

Yes, I started going to Da Vincenzo way back in 1985. Ever Since my first trip to the lovely little Seaside Town on The Amalfi Coast, that was yet to be discover by the masses all around the World. Yes, there were people who had heard about this gorgeous place, but not nearly as many as do now. Yes, Positano for the most part was still relatively un-known back then. That’s before Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. made the movie ONLY YOU that brought the town to the attention of so many more Millions of people then had ever even heard of the palce before. Anyway Cei la Vie.
Now back to Rene Ricard and myself and how I discovered and went to Da Vincenzo way back in the Summer of 1985 (Bar DeMartino also). It was just a few days befor my long awaited first trip to Italy, Spain, and the South of France when as I was walking down 2nd Avenue one night I ran into my friend Alma who was with the Poet RENE RICARD. We were all chatting on the street when I mentioned my trip. When I said I was going to Rome, Venice, and Positano, Rene got quite excited and told me the best places to go to in Rome, Venice and Positano. So besides all the info Rene gave me on Rome and Venice, he told me all about Positano and where to stay and where to eat which included going to Da Vincenzo where Rene told me I’d get the Best Plate of SPAGHETTI VONGOLE that Id’ ever have in my entire life.

Out of most of the places we went in Positano this was easily best. They are so friendly and the food was perfect while overlooking the beach. Our first night they were about to close and stayed open for us to get a light bite and a great bottle of wine and we told them we would be back and they didn’t not disappoint. The seafood pasta was amazing and once again the staff was accommodating. I couldn’t recommend this place more. Enjoy Positano and really get to know the people because it’s a great place.

Yes another deli  (Salumeria). Believe it or not, Salumerias / Rosticcerias have some of the best food in almost every city in Italy, and so is the case in Positano with Latteria Deli and here at Delikatessen. We decided to grab some food to take back some food to enjoy on our balcony. The food was of great quality and very reasonably priced. We bought some Pasta, Panini, and Eggplant, Arancini (Rice Balls) . Everyhtng was super tasty. They make greay Sandwiches (Panini) taht a great to take along with some Fruit and Arancini for an awesome Beach Lunch. If you are staying in Positano for a while and don’t want to eat out all the time then this is a great option. They have a great wine selection if you like to do as we do and keep a bottle or two back at our room , as well asfruit and  bottled water which you always need.

Amalfi Coast Path of the Gods – How to Guide – Positano Minori Ravello

The PATH of The GODS

The AMALFI COAST

WHAT is The PATH pf The GODS ?

The Path of the Gods is a beautiful cliffside hike along the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy going from the town of Amalfi to Positano.

Why is it called the Path of the Gods?

The Path of the Gods, known in Italy as Il Sentiero degli Dei, was so named for its use as the path the gods would take from the heavens to the sea after being lured there by the sirens.

Some will tell you it’s because, here, you’re closer to the sky than you are the sea, or because of its otherworldly views. But for us it was more because we were literally up inside the clouds, looking down on all the mortals, wrestling with who to throw lightning bolts at.

The Path of the Gods has remained a walk through the ages for centuries, providing not only pristine views of the Amalfi Coast, but also a peek back into the old world’s way of traveling. This 7.8-kilometer trek is a perfect way to spend the day and experience the full scale of beauty you can encounter in this area. The adventurous journey will lead you through historic towns, following along ancient mule routes and purveying some of the most remarkable panoramas you will come across in Italy while keeping you apart from the bustling hubbub of tourist attractions. Simply follow our guide on how to best approach this once-in-a-lifetime hiking excursion.

Sentieri Degli Dei

The Starting Point

If there’s one quintessential experience you’ve got to partake in when exploring Italy’s stunning Amalfi Coast, it’s hiking the Path Of The Gods Trail. While walking the 7 km path across the ridge from Nocelle to Bomerano, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Amalfi coastline from the moment you step foot onto the trail, until the moment you leave.

The Path of The Gods, or II Sentiero Degli Dei in Italian, is a historic trail connecting the two mountainside hamlets of Nocelle and Bomerano. In the past, it was the only way for locals to get from one town to the other. Now, it’s preserved for tourism and all of our hiking pleasures.

The path got its name due to its incredible awe-inducing views, much like one would imagine when looking up into the heavens.

LENGTH of The TRAIL

The Path of the Gods trail is a 7km point to point trail. Walking the length of the trail one way will take 1.5-2 hours depending on your speed and how much you stop to take pictures and breaks. We hike pretty fast, but also stopped to take a bunch of photos and it took us 1.5 hours to hike the length of the trail.

The Path of The Gods is a point to point trail. As such, you can start at either the town of Bomerano or Nocelle. Most people recommend hiking from Bomerano to Nocelle for two reasons. One, it’s slightly easier as most of the path is a slight downhill grade, and two, you get better views as you’re walking perpendicular to the peninsula the entire time.

Our recommendation? Hike both directions, starting and ending at the same point. The Path of The Gods is an easy hike in both directions, especially for those that hike regularly. It only took us an hour and a half to walk the entire length of the trail in one direction. For more of a half day outing, you’ll definitely want to hike both directions. Plus, more time on the trail means more time soaking in those stunning coastline views!

Starting and ending at the same trailhead also makes getting to and from the trail much easier. We picked the trailhead that was closest to our AirBnB, which if you’re coming from Sorrento or Positano will be Nocelle. If you’re coming from Amalfi, the trailhead you’ll want to start at is Bomerano.

There’s only one main road from Sorrento to Amalfi, which means everyone who wants to travel between those places is driving the same route. Once you get close to Positano, it’s a huge bottleneck of traffic pretty much from there to Amalfi. Save yourself the undue stress and time of sitting in traffic and put your vacation to better use walking on one of the most gorgeous trails in the world.

To start your hike in Nocelle, you need to first get to Positano. To do this you can either take a bus, drive or ride a scooter or bicycle from your hotel. It’s an extremely scenic route along the ocean, so if you have a bike or scooter we would highly recommend riding to town.

I would avoid driving into Positano as parking is super limited, which is the main source of the traffic jams that occur on the way into town. Taking two wheels instead of four also allows you to bypass the traffic jam and arrive at the trailhead faster.

You have a few options on where to kick off this great day of activity, and it’s smart to do some research on which starting point best suits you. The more popular area to begin the Path of the Gods, also known as Il Sentiero degli Dei, is in Bomerano, a small section of the Agerola comune. Easily reached by bus, you merely get off at the Bomerano stop and follow designated signs that will guide you to the trailhead.

If you don’t have your own form of transportation, not to worry. You have three options.

1. Take a SITA bus that runs from Sorrento to Positano every half hour. Get off in town at Positano Sponda and walk down the main road to Pezzi Pazzi Sas Di De Martino Celeste where you’ll see a set of stairs heading up the mountain. Walk up the 1700 steps up all the way to Nocelle.

2. Alternately, you can take bus 507037 (Amalfi) and get off at Airenzo where you’ll have to walk back down the road a few meters to find the stairs up the mountain to Nocelle.

3. If you’re super adventurous you can try and get off the 507037(Amalfi) bus at Bivio Montepertuso bus stop and then catch a local bus from there up the mountain to Nocelle. Buses depart for Nocelle from the center of Positano every hour so you might have to wait for a bit at the Bivio Montepertuso bus stop depending on when you get there.
